Gender: Male Religion: Roman Catholic Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Columnist, Radio Personality Nationality: United States Executive summary: Boston Herald columnist, talk-radio host During the 2004 presidential election, Howie Carr was a self-appointed John Kerry basher. During a C-SPAN Washington Journal interview on 16 July 2004 one viewer asked him if he could say anything positive at all about Kerry. Carr's response: "I would have to say he's the most successful gigolo in the United States of America right now." What's more, Carr had assiduously avoided comparisons with President Bush until Brian Lamb finally dragged it out of him:

Good morning. Mr. Carr, you know I think your credibility suffers when you get on the subject about pulling rank. You know, the ultimate rank-pulling was when George Bush got into the National, Air National Guard in Texas over a list of 300 people. And then of course we know that he didn't even serve his time, and, and then now they've conven, conveniently lost the records. And of course Kerry served with distinction. You know that's, that's the ultimate test. And your whole argument just goes down the toilet when, when you don't talk about this fact. |

Mr. Carr? |

Well, I thought I was here to talk about John Kerry and, and, and his, his, his record, and his, his life and, I'm not here to talk about George Bush. |

Let me ask you -- a couple of emails here. JC from Winston-Salem, North Carolina: "So, what's the difference between the one candidate who passes himself off as a populist when he is, in fact, a liberal elitist and the other who passes himself off as a common Texas rancher when he is actually a pampered, privileged and wealthy ne'er-do-well? In truth, there is no difference in social standing between the two candidates. It would appear your guest would do well not to cast stones at glass houses." |
CARR: |
Well again, I, I'm here to talk about John Kerry. John Kerry is the guy I, that, that I've covered over the years -- |
MODERATOR: |
You can talk about George Bush. |
CARR: |
I, I just, you know. George Bush, I mean there's, no one is saying that he, he led a perfect life, least of all himself. And, and, I, I don't think, you know, the thing is though, I don't think George Bush is kidding. I, I think George Bush is, really is, does have sort of downhome tastes. I think he, he, he enjoys spending time, you know, cutting brush down in Crawford, Texas. And, you know, you have to, you have to decide who, who you, I mean it's one of the decisions you have to make when you're mak-- trying to figure out who to vote for for President. I mean, who's, who is more like yourself: some guy who's cutting brush, brush out on the ranch, or a guy like John Kerry, who's going to spend the, the weekend on, on Nantucket, writing his, his speech out in longhand and living in his, or hanging out in his, his second wife's first husband's mansion on Hurlbert Avenue? |
