The "Three Governors Controversy" had Thompson, newly elected Lieutenant Governor, the current Governor Ellis Arnall, who thought he could serve until a new Governor was elected, and Herman Talmadge, son of the Governor-Elect and appointed by the state legislature, all vying for position. Talmadge briefly assumed office, but the Georgia State Supreme Court ruled that Thompson was the proper successor.
