Perry Farrell AKA Peretz Bernstein Born: 29-Mar-1959 Birthplace: Queens, NY
Gender: Male Religion: Jewish Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Bisexual Occupation: Singer Nationality: United States Executive summary: Lead singer of Jane's Addiction Brought into the world in Queens, New York, Perry Bernstein was raised solely by his father (a diamond jeweller) after the suicide of his mother when he was three years old. For a time, Perry worked in New York's diamond district at his father's jewelry business, but while still in his teens the entire family relocated to Miami, following which Perry moved on his own to California to attend college. While in L.A. he developed an interest in the local punk scene, and later he became involved in the early 80s goth movement, changing his name to Perry Farrell and becoming a member of the band Psi Com. While some recording sessions with Psi Com were completed, none were released before the band ceased to exist around 1984.
In 1985 Farrell joined with Eric Avery, Dave Navarro and Steve Perkins to create Jane's Addiction, a band that blended together aspects of L.A.'s various music scenes. Their reputation on the club circuit grew quickly, and the popularity of their eponymous 1987 release on the Triple X label instigated tumescence in many a corporate record executive; after a lively bidding war, Farrell and his cohorts ultimately decided to whore themselves out to Warner Brothers, who profited nicely from the band's next two platinum albums -- Nothing's Shocking (1988) and Ritual de lo Habitual (1990). Even as success and drug abuse conspired to derail the band, Farrell compounded the pressure by founding the Lolapalooza traveling monstrosity in 1991 and headlining the event with Jane's Addiction on its inaugural run. Shortly after the completion of the tour, the group disbanded.
Along with Jane drummer Perkins, Perry Farrell followed up by creating the band Porno for Pyros in 1992. Its two releases, Porno for Pyros (1993) and Good God's Urge (1996), were well-received but failed to compete with the popularity of his former band. By 1997 Pyros was abandoned and Jane's Addiction resurrected for a reunion tour (with Eric Avery's role being assumed by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea), after which Farrell turned his attention to a project he had named Jubilee. The idea was later dropped in favor of a solo album, but the result -- Song Yet To Be Sung -- would not materialize until 2001. Beginning in 2000 the singer became involved in the American Anti-Slavery Group, a group dedicated to negotiating the freedom of slaves in countries such as Sudan and Thailand. As a member of the AASG, he traveled to Sudan to pay for the release of over 2000 people forced to live in slavery, afterwards organizing "freedom parties" where they could celebrate their new-found liberation. Around this time Farrell became active in various other charities as well, including the "Free Tibet" and "Drop the Debt" campaigns.
By 2003 both Jane's Addiction and Lolapalooza were once again fully operational, the former releasing their fourth album Strays on the Capitol label and for the second time assuming the headlining slot for the latter.
