Lee. After the war in partnership with his younger brother, John W. Hanes, he established the P.H. Hanes Tobacco Company, which became the third largest tobacco distributorship in America. In 1900 the tobacco company was sold to R. J. Reynolds for $175,000, and the Hanes brothers invested their windfall -- separately -- in the undergarment business. Pleasant Hanes established the P.H. Hanes Knitting Company, and began manufacturing underwear for men, while his brother opened a sock factory that became Hanes Hosiery Mills Co. The brothers' companies were merged in 1962 as Hanes Corporation, now known as Hanesbrands.
