Executive summary: Exiled Chinese poet of the Misty School

Founded China's first independent literary journal Jintian ("Today") in 1978, as the main mouthpiece of the Misty poets. The journal was banned in 1980. Following the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, the Chinese government alleged that Dao's poetry had influenced the student protesters and consequently forced him into exile.

His pseudonym means "Northern Island".
