D. Shortridge was born in Cabell County, now in West Virginia, in 1830. When he was three years of age, his parents settled in Monroe County, Missouri. He was educated in the local schools, and later at an academy near Paris, Missouri. In 1860 he married Virginia Brady, who passed away in 1880. Two years later he remarried, at which time he moved his family to North Dakota, taking up residence in Larimore, Grand Forks County. He later owned a large farm eight miles north of Larimore, where he resided when elected Governor in 1892 on a fusion ticket of democrats and populists, serving one term. He was closely identified with the early struggles of Dakota pioneers, and was deeply loyal to the state and its interests. His last political act was the nomination of John Burke for the office of Governor, at the state convention in Minot. Shortridge died in 1908 at Devils Lake.
