Unusually, he broke with mainstream Republicans in opposing the tax cuts of the 1980s, believing that doing so would make it impossible to balance the budget. Between 1947 and 1978, Olson maintained a farm of 750 acres in Kenosha County, with about 500 head of cattle. Subsequent to that, he moved to a farm of 160 acres in Bassett, and after his retirement from politics in 1982 relocated to Florida. Olson was the last Lt.
