He is known for devising what is now called the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, a method of assessing materials' resistance to scratching or abrasion. The scale goes from 1 to 10, with talc, which can easily be scratched by a fingernail, rated "1", and diamonds, the hardest natural stone, rated "10".
