He was hired as a research assistant at the Pasteur Institute when he was 19 years old, and worked there for the next 46 years. He interrupted his work to become involved in the French underground during World War II, for which he was awarded the Médaille de la Résistance by Charles de Gaulle. His wife, microbiologist Marguerite Lwoff, was his frequent scientific collaborator.
