Carter won the Pulitzer Prize for his 1993 photograph Wanting A Meal, depicting a vulture stalking an emaciated Sudanese child. Collaborated with photojournalists Ken Oosterbroek, Greg Marinovich (1990 Pulitzer), and Joao Silva, known together as the Bang-Bang Club for their coverage of violence in South Africa. On an outing 18 April 1994, a week after Carter learned he had won the Pulitzer, Oosterbroek was killed in crossfire and Marinovich wounded.
