Melky Cabrera AKA Melky Astacio Cabrera Born: 11-Aug-1984 Birthplace: Santo Domingo Oeste, Dominican Republic
Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: Hispanic Occupation: Baseball Nationality: Dominican Republic Executive summary: White Sox outfielder In the midst of his eighth season in Major League Baseball, outfielder Melky Cabrera, then with the San Francisco Giants, was suspended for 50 games after failing a test for steroid use. The steroid use was fairly obvious — virtually all of his 2012 offensive statistics were much, much better than one would anticipate from his career stats. His 2012 batting average, for example, was second best in the National League at .346 when he was suspended; his pre-2012 career average was .275.
More memorable than just another ballplayer using performance-enhancing drugs was Cabrera's response to the suspension. He reportedly paid upwards of $10K to launch a fake website for a non-existent product, hoping to establish that he had taken the banned substance inadvertently. Now plays for the Chicago White Sox, and promises he's not on steroids. Risk Factors: Performance-Enhancing Drugs
