Hawkins saw none of his song's later success as a rock-and-roll touchstone, having sold off his rights for a pittance in the early 1960s. Hawkins drifted from music, becoming addicted to benzedrine for a time, and later founding a crisis center for distressed youth in Little Rock. Somehow he received a small sum through MCA's consumption of the Chess Records catalogue, which prodded him to investigate home recording toward the end of his life. Wife: (two sons)
