Taylor was declared the victor and sworn in, but within the month investigations into electoral fraud led to the election being overturned in favor of state Senator William Goebel. Goebel was shot by an unknown assailant while entering the Capitol building on 30 January 1900, the day before he was to be sworn in. Goebel assumed office but did not last the week, dying on 3 February. Investigation into the slaying suggested a plot orchestrated by Gov. Taylor, who slipped into Indiana to escape indictment. Taylor's Secretary of State Caleb Powers and two others were convicted as accessories to the murder, but the gunman himself was never conclusively identified.
