By the age of 17, she was a regular in Des Moines area amateur plays. In her early 20s, she was in the original Broadway run of South Pacific, and moonlighting on live TV anthologies such as Actor's Studio, Kraft Television Theatre, and Lux Video Theatre. She has been a regular cast member on at least ten television series, including the original Bob and Ray Show. She became famous as Mary Tyler Moore's nosy and neurotic neighbor Phyllis, and later had her own Phyllis spin-off. She replaced Charlotte Rae on The Facts of Life, and played Frankie Muñiz's grandmother on Malcolm in the Middle. Leachman has won seven Emmys in five categories.
In films, she played a dangerous hitchhiker in the noir classic Kiss Me Deadly, a hooker in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and Frau Blücher in Young Frankenstein. She won an Oscar as the lonely Ruth in The Last Picture Show.
In her youth, Leachman was a beauty queen, winning the title of Miss Chicago in 1946. At age 71, she appeared nude, in body paint, on the cover of Alternative Medicine magazine.
