Executive summary: Tim LaHaye's wife

While her husband, Left Behind co-novelist Tim LaHaye, plots intricate details of humanity's ultimate punishment in the coming apocalypse, Beverly LaHaye is a tireless activist working to ensure that America is governed by Christian principles and Biblical values.

The LaHaye lovebirds met when they were both students at the fundamentalist and then-segregated Bob Jones University, and she soon dropped out of school to become his bride as he went into the ministry. They began their LaHayes on Family Life television broadcasts in 1956, and in their more than fifty years of wedded bliss both LaHayes have become major celebrities to America's religious right. In 2005, Time Magazine called them "the Christian power couple."

Beverly LaHaye's books include The Spirit-Controlled Woman and The Desires of a Woman's Heart. Together, Rev and Mrs LaHaye co-authored the Christian sex manual, The Act of Marriage: The Beauty of Sexual Love. The book's cover blurb promises to explain "what lovemaking means to a woman, what lovemaking means to a man, how to counteract impotency, and the key to feminine response."

A frequent theme of LaHaye's writing and speaking appearances is that women should not work outside the home, but the dynamic Mrs LaHaye has rarely been a stay-at-home mom herself. She has said that her "crowning achievement" was her founding of Concerned Women for America, a group dedicated to bringing "Biblical principles into all levels of public policy". CWA's original mandate was its outspoken opposition to the federal Equal Rights Amendment. The proposal sounds good, LaHaye often explained, but she had to oppose it because she knew it would not be "interpreted in the light of Scriptures or by churches."

She says CWA is built on "the foundation of the Word of God," and that before one becomes politically active it is important to first understand "you are a sinner and deserve punishment in Hell." She has said that feminists are "spiritual forces of darkness", and "abortion, pornography, premarital sex, and homosexuality are schemes of the devil." CWA is opposed to all forms of pornography, abortion, parental and legal rights for homosexuals, gay marriage, health or legal benefits for un-married couples, separation of church and state, and the United Nations' alleged intrusions on American national sovereignty.

LaHaye has led CWA since its inception in 1979, and is still CWA's chairman -- not chairwoman, please note. Under her guidance and, she says, God's mandate the group has campaigned to discourage major TV networks from accepting ads for condoms, successfully pressured the Department of Health and Human Services to cancel research on teenage sexuality, filed an amicus brief in the Supreme Court supporting the Children's Internet Protection Act, and supported the impeachment of Pres Bill Clinton. CWA has challenged laws against the physical blockade of abortion clinics, lobbied to ban so-called partial-birth abortions, led a boycott against companies that manufacture or sell mifepristone (the RU-486 abortion pill), and worked to keep emergency contraceptives from being easily available to rape victims. LaHaye's group led the hysteria over an accidental split-second broadcast of Janet Jackson's near-nipple areola during the Super Bowl, which led to laws mandating huge fines for any TV or radio station that broadcasts such indecency, or any words deemed equally abhorrent to public purity. CWA has worked to forbid funding for embryonic stem cell research, campaigned against TV ads for alcoholic beverages, and led the opposition to an imagined United Nations plot to "nationalize all the world's children."

LaHaye testified before the Senate in support of Antonin Scalia's 1986 nomination to the US Supreme Court, and in later years CWA sponsored publicity blitzes to support the nominations of Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas. And even decades after the death of Dr Alfred Kinsey, LaHaye still demands that Congress investigate his "fraudulent, immoral research," while CWA funds a program to "debunk" his findings on human sexuality. She has spoken at numerous events sponsored by Unification Church's Sun Myung Moon.

Rev and Mrs LaHaye are also co-authors of Against The Tide: How To Raise Sexually Pure Kids in an "Anything-Goes" World. Their son, Lee LeHaye, is widely whispered to be gay, and serves as Chief Financial Officer for Concerned Women for America.
