Rockefeller and son of billionaire John D. Rockefeller, Jr., John D. Rockefeller III was the driving force behind establishment of the non-profit Lincoln Center in Manhattan. He established the Population Council in 1952 to address world overpopulation issues, and in 1972 headed President Richard M. Nixon's Commission on Population Growth and the American Future, recommending universal access to reproductive information and universal coverage for all patient costs related to maternity, abortion or voluntary sterilization. As a hobby he amassed an enormous collection of Asian art, and left it to the Asia Society (another organization he founded).
