Astrophysicist Frank J. Low invented the gallium-doped germanium bolometer, an advanced thermal detector which measures radiant energy that led to much of modern infrared astronomy. He was part of the Lear Jet and Kuiper Airborne observatories, which flew advanced telescopes high in the atmosphere, and he was a primary organizer of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). His ultra-low temperature cooling system was used in IRAS, the Hubble Space Telescope, and NASA's Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF). He was also the founder and president of Infrared Laboratories, Inc.
