Executive summary: Co-Founder of Fisher-Price Toys Irving Price had a successful career as an executive with Woolworth, retired at an early age and was elected Mayor of East Aurora, New York. He provided most of the cash to establish Fisher-Price toys in 1930, with his business partners Herman G. Fisher and Helen M. Schelle (b. 1893, d. 1984). Founded at the height of the Great Depression, Fisher-Price struggled for several years, paying low wages but retaining its workers with promises of a stake in future profits. The company made its first profit in 1936, a modest $3,000, and true to management's word, distributed the entire windfall in silver dollars among its few dozen employees.
The Snoopy Sniffer, Fisher-Price's first major success, was introduced in 1938. The company is probably best known for its "Little People" line, humanoid objects with round heads and cylindrical bodies first seen as the driver of a 1930s-era toy called the Woodsey Cart, and first made removable as passengers in the company's Safety School Bus, introduced in 1959. Price's wife, Margaret Evans Price, was a well-known illustrator of children's books and cousin of US Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes.
