Later, at the School of Medicine, his research specialty was the endocrine glands, but among his over 600 published papers he also studied circulation and respiration, immunity, the digestive and nervous systems, and the chemical make-up of animal venoms. In 1947, for his research into how hormones from the pituitary gland work to metabolize sugars, he became the first Argentinean scientist to win the Nobel Prize in Medicine. His Nobel honors were shared with Carl and Gerty Cori.
Known for his outspoken liberal politics, Houssay was stripped of his academic position when Juan Peron first took power in Argentina. He worked two years at the privately-funded Institute of Biology and Experimental Medicine, before the Argentine government ordered him fired there as well. Changing political winds allowed him to return to the University of Buenos Aires in 1955.
