After graduating from Harvard Law in 1855 he traveled around the western frontier with his brother but found it a bit uncouth commenting "...we were not ready for the West, or the West was not ready for us."
Returning to the East Coast he found work at the law firm of William M. Evarts
and was soon a part of an elite social network. He usually "found [him]self among the best people" at dinner parties with Hamilton Fish.
Along with Elihu Root Choate was involved in the downfall of Tammany Hall's Boss Tweed. He was appointed to the Committee of Seventy which was responsible for indicting then Senator Tweed on charges of embezzlement. In 1888 he defended John D. Rockefeller during an Trust investigation conducted by the Senate of New York.
