He left Bass in 1987 to form Columbia Hospital, which merged with HCA in 1994. At the request of George W. Bush and Edward W. Rose, Rainwater organized the investment team that bought the Texas Rangers in 1989[1]. In the mid-90s he put wife Darla Moore in charge of his investments; success led to their acquisition of Mesa Petroleum from T. Boone Pickens in 1996.
