[1] While born in Spain and ostensibly a citizen thereof, was a resident of Mexico from 1946, where his father became a Mexican citizen. Placido attended school in Mexico City and joined the Mexican National Opera in 1959. He married a Mexican national and for decades, the 1950s through at least the 1990s, maintained Mexico City as his primary address. He can be considered more Mexican than Spanish.
