Alfred Regnery AKA Alfred S. Regnery Born: 21-Nov-1942 Birthplace: Chicago, IL
Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Publisher Party Affiliation: Republican Nationality: United States Executive summary: The American Spectator In law school, Alfred Regnery's roommate was David Keene, who went on to become chairman of the American Conservative Union. In 1976, only five years after getting his degree, Regnery ran for District Attorney in Wisconsin's Dane County, promising to "get tough on crime". During the campaign, his wife reported that she was assaulted in their home, which could have provided great publicity for his law-and-order candidacy. Her story, though, was full of inconsistencies and impossibilities, and police came to doubt it was true. Within days the investigation was closed at the family's request, and Regnery lost the election to Jim Doyle, who later became Wisconsin's Governor.
In the early 1980s Regnery was a prominent advocate for defunding the Legal Services Corporation, which provides lawyers for the poor. He was appointed by Ronald Reagan to head the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in 1983, and during his tenure Regnery was the unofficial head of Ed Meese's Commission on Pornography. The Commission concluded that pornography is harmful to society, a finding at odds with most scientific reports and contradicted by an earlier inquiry conducted by the Nixon administration. Furthering his office's effort to combat underage crime, Regnery signed off on an exorbitant and noncompetitive $734,000 grant for Dr. Judith Reisman to research whether a link exists between pornography and juvenile crime, and he also authorized generous grants to Jerry Falwell's Liberty College and conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly.
His father, Henry Regnery, founded Regnery Publishing, the conservative publishing house that published William F. Buckley's first book in 1951. According to longtime CIA insider E. Howard Hunt, Regnery was, at least in its early years, subsidized by the CIA. These days, the company publishes works by Pat Buchanan, Ann Coulter, (ambiguous link, David Horowitz), Michelle Malkin, Oliver North, and others. The infamous "Swift Boat Veterans" book smearing John Kerry was published by Regnery.
When Alfred Regnery took over the company, he revived sluggish sales by adding a new generation of conservative authors, and he remained in charge even after selling it to Thomas L. Phillips in 1993. Under Regnery's leadership, the company published Gary Aldrich's book claiming Hillary Clinton had lesbian affairs while First Lady and hung crack pipes from the White House Christmas tree, Emmett Tyrrell's book claiming that Bill Clinton had gone on cocaine benders as a young man and speculating that the KGB might have funded his collegiate visit to Soviet Moscow, and Ann Coulter's book arguing that there should be public debate "about whether to impeach or assassinate" President Clinton in the wake of his affair with Monica Lewinsky.
As part of Phillips Publishing International, Regnery Publishing is now a sister entity to such conservative voices as Human Events magazine, the Evans-Novak Political Report, the Conservative Book Club, and the Christian Family Book Club. Regnery himself left the company in 2003, to become publisher of the conservative American Spectator magazine.
Regnery's grandfather, William H. Regnery, was founder of the America First Committee, a group which lobbied and argued against war on Nazi Germany. Alfred Regnery's cousin, William Regnery II, is founder of the Charles Martel Society, named for an eighth-century Christian warrior who defeated a Muslim army, thus, in the Martel Society's view, preserving Europe for Christian civilization. The group publishes The Occidental Quarterly, promoting anti-immigration policies so enthusiastically it has been listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a white supremacist organization. William Regnery II has also attempted to start a dating service for "heterosexual whites of Christian cultural heritage".
