Due to several key players having turned professional in 1967, competition in Australia was light. Bowrey, who had never advanced beyond quarterfinals in any Grand Slam, defeated Juan Gisbert, a Spaniard. In 1968 the tournament became the Australian Open and he lost in the quarterfinals to Ray Ruffels. Bowrey retired in 1972. Wife: Lesley Turner (tennis player, m. 1968)
