Executive summary: Hannah Montana Destiny Hope Cyrus was born in 1992, daughter of country music singer Billy Ray Cyrus and his wife Leticia Finley. Her nickname was originally "Smiley", later shortened to "Miley", and in 2008 she made that her legal name. Seeking to be an actress from an early age, she obtained only minor roles before Disney cast her to play the lead in Hannah Montana, as an ordinary student, Miley Ray Stewart, who becomes popstar Hannah Montana at night. Stewart's father on the series was played by Cyrus' real-life father, Billy Ray, who later complained that the show "destroyed my family."
Concurrently, Miley has released two albums, Meet Miley Cyrus in 2007 and Breakout in 2008. Both debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200.
In 2008, it became known that the magazine Vanity Fair would publish photos of an underage Miley Cyrus in what can be seen as sexually alluring poses, contrary to the image which Disney would like to portray. Her parents feigned ignorance, but they were present at the photoshoot. Miley issued an apology. The issue of her underage sexuality was also evident in her choice of boyfriend. She dated underwear model Justin Gaston in 2008-09, while she was 16 and he was 20. At the 2009 Teen Choice Awards, the 16-year-old Miley performed what can only be called a poledance, and she has continued to raise eyebrows with risque performances.
