Henry Louis Gates, Jr.Born: 16-Sep-1950
Birthplace: Keyser, WV

Gender: Male
Religion: Christian
Race or Ethnicity: Black
Sexual orientation: Straight
Occupation: Author, Columnist

Nationality: United States
Executive summary: The Signifying Monkey

Right leg is two inches shorter than his left, stemming from a misdiagnosed childhood sports injury, hence his nickname "Skip."

In 1983, Gates rediscovered the first book published in America by a black person, Harriet E. Wilson's Our Nig (1859).

On 16 July 2009, Gates was confronted by police in his home after reports that a black man -- Gates -- had broken and entered. After showing the police officer his driver's license with his address on it, Gates berated the policeman for racial profiling, and his hostile attitude prompted a disorderly conduct arrest. He could never have been convicted on the charge, as in Massachusetts disorderly conduct must occur in a public place, not a private residence.
