Gene Lees, despite his close friendship with Desmond, writes that he learned about the affair only because he had met the woman before he knew Paul: 'Paul never mentioned her to me, and I mentioned her only once, when we both had a few too many drinks. Paul got tears in his eyes, and I never spoke of her again.' The former Mrs. Breitenfeld later remarried, while Paul maintained a confirmed state of noncommitment in his later relations with women."
