Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Occupation: Scientist, Doctor Nationality: Sweden Executive summary: Prostaglandins Sune K. Bergström won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1982, sharing the honor with his former student, Bengt I. Samuelsson, and with an Englishman, John R. Vane. Their studies advanced scientific knowledge of prostaglandins, natural compounds made by living cells, originally discovered by Ulf von Euler. Bergstrom showed that prostaglandin is not just one chemical, but rather a whole family of substances found throughout the body. Prostaglandins protect tissue from being damaged by the body's digestive juices, are involved in the control of blood pressure and body temperature, and are important in regulating fertility. Drugs derived from prostaglandins are now widely used for birth control, in abortion, for pain relief, and to prevent blood clots.
