Tadao Kashio took control at that time, and transformed Casio from a small maker of electronic relays and yubiwa cigarette holders to a major manufacturer of cash registers, sound systems, musical keyboards, digital cameras, liquid crystal display pocket televisions, electronic calculators, digital watches, and watches that doubled as calculators. Trained in electronic engineering, Kashio was very much involved in his company's development of affordable but reliable synthesizers and calculators, including the world's first all-electronic calculator, introduced in 1957. Casio's calculators were the first to use the now-familiar 10-key numeric pad, superceding earlier calculators that had nine separate keys (numbered 1-9) for each digit. The company's name is an Englishized pronunciation of the Kashio's family name.
