Armstrong. Whittington was hospitalized with an erratic heartbeat and a collapsed lung, and about 150 pieces of birdshot remain embedded in his eye socket, scalp hand, and near his heart, which triggered a heart attack a few days later.
After being released from the hospital, Whittington released a statement basically apologizing for being shot: "My family and I are deeply sorry for all that Vice President Cheney and his family have had to go through this week." Contacted almost five years later by a Washington Post reporter who asked whether Cheney had ever apologized for shooting him, Whittington paused and said "I'm not going to go into that".
