Executive summary: Shot by Dick Cheney Harry Whittington was accidentally shot by Vice President Dick Cheney on 11 February 2006, while they were hunting on land owned by the family of Anne L. Armstrong. Whittington was hospitalized with an erratic heartbeat and a collapsed lung, and about 150 pieces of birdshot remain embedded in his eye socket, scalp hand, and near his heart, which triggered a heart attack a few days later.
After being released from the hospital, Whittington released a statement basically apologizing for being shot: "My family and I are deeply sorry for all that Vice President Cheney and his family have had to go through this week." Contacted almost five years later by a Washington Post reporter who asked whether Cheney had ever apologized for shooting him, Whittington paused and said "I'm not going to go into that".
