[1] This date is often given as 7 June 1922, which is apparently a date Graziano himself gave to the US Army (he deserted, and served a year in prison as a result). The date on his tombstone in Locust Valley is 1 January 1919. He gives yet a third date in his autobiography, Somebody Up There Likes Me (1955), page 7: "On the other hand, maybe I had been on my way ever since the midwife brought me into the world on New Year's Day, 1921."
