Soon after his conscription into the German Army, Pieck was arrested and court martialed for disseminating anti-war propaganda. He fled the country and lived for a time in Italy.
Pieck returned to Germany between the wars and was elected to the Reichstag. Then the Nazis came to power and Pieck fled again, this time to Moscow.
After World War II, Pieck cofounded the German Communist Party, and ultimately served as president of East Germany from 1949 until his death in 1960.
