Snefru AKA Snefru Born: c. 2635 BC Birthplace: Egypt Died: c. 2589 BC Location of death: Egypt Cause of death: unspecified Remains: Mummified, whereabouts unknown
Gender: Male Religion: Other Race or Ethnicity: Middle Eastern Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Royalty Nationality: Ancient Egypt Executive summary: Pyramid builder Snefru was the first Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt's 4th dynasty. He led wars against the Nubians and Libyans, and established trade relations with Lebanon and the Mediterranean nations. Beyond that, little is known of his policies, reign, or life. His father is believed to have been Pharaoh Huni, but his mother was a concubine. Since the Egyptians' held that royalty was passed from mother to child, Snefru could take power only by marrying his half-sister, Hetepheres. He had at least two other wives, and at least six children.
The oddly shaped eight-step pyramid at Maidum was probably started by Huni and completed under Snefru, who altered the design. He then constructed the Bent Pyramid (its angle changes midway between base and apex) and the Red Pyramid (so named for the reddish hue its stone assumes in the light of sunset), which shows further refined technique, better engineering and workmanship, and fewer cracks in the stone. It the first of the "true" pyramids, abandoning the "stepped pyramid" design previously used. It is generally assumed that Snefru was entombed in this Red Pyramid. A mummified male was found there by archaeologists in 1948, but the mummy was stolen before its identity could be ascertained, and it has never been recovered.
