Served as Chairman of the West Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (1961-66), Secretary at the Ministry of Finance (1966-70), Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (1971-75), and Secretary General at the Ministry of Defence (1975-77). After the overthrow of the Bhutto government and declaration of martial law, Ishaq Khan served as de facto Finance Minister (1977-85) and Chairman of the Pakistani Senate (1985-88). Became acting President in August 1988 after the death of Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, and was formally elected in December of that year. As President, Khan twice dismissed the government over charges of corruption -- that of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 1990 and of Nawaz Sharif in 1993. [1] Pashtun.
