After ten years at house Balenciaga, he founded his own house and achieved breakout in 1964 with the launch of his "Space Age" collection, a futuristic line highlighting whites and silvers, matching the zeitgeist of the time. It is not known definitively who designed the miniskirt, whether it be him, British designer Mary Quant, or some other person, as several claim credit. Business grew to 125 boutiques by the early 1970s. Courrèges retired in 1995, his wife continuing with the firm; he sold the brand altogether in 2011.
