He has studied active galactic nuclei, angular fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation, quasar absorption lines, and superclusters of galaxies and large scale structure. He says he was inspired toward science by listening to Fred Hoyle's lectures as a teen. His wife, astronomer Anneila Sargent, is Director of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory and was President of the American Astronomical Society from 2000-02.
