Accused of passing a $20 bill at a convenience store, Floyd was held under a choke hold by police officer Derek Chauvin for nine minutes, unable to breathe. The incident was recorded by a bystander. After Floyd's death, in a trial attracting considerable national attention, officer Chauvin was convicted of second-degree murder. Three other officers at the scene face additional charges.
