He began his first confectionery in 1902, when he was 19, selling butter cream candies made in his own kitchen, mostly wholesale to local stores. That business failed, but in 1911 he opened the Mar-O-Bar Company in Tacoma, Washington -- the company now known as Mars. In 1923 Mars had its first great success with the Milky Way bar, designed to taste like a chocolate malted milk. The Snickers bar, named after a beloved horse owned by the Mars family, was introduced in 1930, and originally was made without chocolate coating. In 1932, Mars unveiled the Three Musketeers bar, originally a three-piece concoction of chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla, later reformulated as chocolate nougat coated with milk chocolate. With his wealth, the elder Mars constructed a huge estate in Tennessee, which he called Milky Way.
