Henri Cartan is known for his work in homological algebra (the application of algebraic technique to topological spaces), analytic functions of complex variables, and the theory of sheaves. He was a founder of the "Nicolas Bourbaki" group, a collective of French mathematicians who revitalized the study of math in France after World War II left most of that nation's top mathematicians dead. His father was the famed mathematician Élie Cartan.
