Although his ancestors were all bearded, he was always seen clean-shaven. He also wore an earring. During his reign he managed to fill the treasury completely whereupon it was locked and covered with his seal. He then declared, "If any of my successors can fill the treasury as much as I have, they may use their own seal, otherwise they all will use my seal". This wish was honored by Selim's successors. as none of them could fill the treasury as much as he had. His seal was used to lock the treasury for four centuries until the final dissolution of the Ottoman Empire.
