John Mack is a Pulitzer Prize winning author and a Harvard Medical School professor of psychiatry best known for his research into the alleged alien abductions phenomenon. Mack's research generated renewed attention to the subject, as well as a fresh though unlikely interpretation. According to Mack, regardless of whether the phenomenon was real in the conventional, physical sense, abductees might still be experiencing some kind of authentic interaction with another form of intelligence. Whether this intelligence was "alien", divine, or merely a projection from the patient's own unconscious, was open to interpretation. Mack's work is not without precedent, as even Carl Jung saw significance in the apparent mass hysteria over UFOs and extraterrestrials. Mack won the Pulitzer for A Prince of Our Disorder (1977), his biography of T. E. Lawrence.
