Gerome moved to Paris at the age of 16. He was a student of French painter Paul Delaroche and Swiss painter Charles Gleyre. After two visits to Egypt, he painted Oriental and Middle Eastern-influenced paintings, including An Almeh, The Bath, The Pelt Merchant, and Arabs Crossing the Desert. He mainly painted mythological and historical themes. Gerome was very against Impressionism and other newer styles of painting. He taught at the Academy des Beaux Arts. Marrying the daughter of art dealer Adolphe Goupil coincidentally helped further his art career, bringing him connections and contacts.
