Even as a young child playing T-ball, he was known as "No Nonsense Nomar," for taking the game so seriously. His high school team won the league championship in both his junior and senior years, and Garciaparra was named MVP in his final season. At Georgia Tech, his team won the school's first College World Series, and he on the 1992 U.S. Olympic baseball team. Playing for the Boston Red Sox, Garciaparra was unanimously voted American League Rookie of the Year in 1997. He led the league in batting in 1999 and 2000. On 23 July 2003 -- his birthday -- Garciaparra became the first player in major league history to hit three home runs in three at-bats in three consecutive innings.
In a blockbuster deal, Garciaparra was traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Chicago Cubs on 31 July 2004. In return, Boston received two Gold Glove defensive players, shortstop Orlando Cabrera (an 8-year veteran with a career batting average of .246), and first-baseman Doug Mientkiewicz (a 7-year vet, batting .250).
Garciaparra is married to Mia Hamm, one of America's premier female professional soccer players. Hamm played on US women's national team that won the 1991 Women's World Cup, 1996 Olympic Gold Medal, and 1999 Women's World Cup.
In 2004, Garciaparra was sued by former Red Sox teammate Mo Vaughn's Hit Dog Training and Fitness Center. Vaughn alleges that one of his ex-employees improperly used information from a customer list to divert children from Hit Dog to a batting clinic hosted by Garciaparra.
