Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Criminal Nationality: Canada Executive summary: Notorious Canadian bank robber Military service: Canadian Army (infantry, WWII) Once a hobo, Edwin Alonzo Boyd joined the Canadian Army and became an infantryman. In 1949 he robbed a bank using a Luger brought back as a war prize. He returned shortly afterwards to the same bank to determine if he had been recognized. He had not. Boyd teamed with other bank robbers, one of whom sang to the police, resulting in his capture. Three men, Boyd, Lennie Jackson and Willie Jackson (no relation) escaped from jail in 1951. Engagement in further bank robberies brought them notoriety as the "Boyd Gang." After capture and yet another escape, two of his cohorts murdered a police detective, and the three of them did not remain at large for long. Boyd was jailed in 1952 for eight life sentences; his two cohorts fared less well with execution. In prison math, eight life sentences equalled only 14 years, and after parole from prison in 1966, lived under an assumed identity in British Columbia, where he married a disabled woman.
