During premiere of the Batman film The Dark Knight Rises, shot 71 people, killing 12 at the Century 16 theater in Aurora, Colorado. Total capacity at the theater is 300. After the massacre, police found Holmes' apartment heavily mined and booby trapped, "designed to kill whomever entered it."

Had no prior criminal record or recorded history of mental health issues, though described by neighbors as a "recluse." He frequently played Guitar Hero. Holmes' application to join the Lead Valley Range, a gun club in nearby Byers, was rejected after the management listened to his outgoing voicemail message and found it "bizarre."
