[1] Clay Aiken has asserted on several occasions that he is straight (Rolling Stone, June 2003). In the National Enquirer (26th January 2006), former U.S. Army Green Beret John Paulus, age 38, claims to have met Aiken in an Internet chat room and had unprotected sex with him on 24th December 2005, in a North Carolina hotel room. In a Monica Lewinsky turn-of-events, Paulus claimed to have Aiken's "DNA sample" on a washcloth. Paulus later issued a carefully worded retraction to his story. In 2008, following the birth of a child through a surrogate, Aiken came out to People magazine, the headline in large type on the cover reading, "Yes, I'm Gay."
