He is the namesake of an award presented annually since 1969 by the American Meteorological Society to recognize "highly significant research or development achievement in the atmospheric or hydrologic sciences". He was a childhood friend of violin virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin. His son, Nicholas Charney, was the founding publisher of Psychology Today.
