Roy Moore AKA Roy Stuart Moore Born: 11-Feb-1947 Birthplace: Gadsden, AL
Gender: Male Religion: Baptist Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Judge Nationality: United States Executive summary: Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Military service: US Army (1969-74) Former competitive kickboxer-turned-lawyer, who rose to become Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, until he lost his job over a stone monument commemorating the Ten Commandments. The monument, designed by Moore and installed in his courtroom, is four feet tall, three feet wide, and made of several tons of granite adorned with quotes from the U.S. National Anthem and Declaration of Independence, but the centerpiece of the monument is a carved depiction of two large tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments.
Moore maintained that the monument "serves to remind ... the people of Alabama who visit the Alabama Judicial Building, of the truth stated in the Preamble to the Alabama Constitution that in order to establish justice we must invoke 'the favor and guidance of almighty God'." Others, including the American Civil Liberties Union, argued that the artwork amounted to a state endorsement of Christianity and Judaism, making believers in other religions, as well as atheists and agnostics, feel tacitly reduced in citizenship. A federal judge ordered the monument removed from the courtroom in 2003, but Moore refused. He was subsequently removed from office by the Alabama Court of the Judiciary, and the monument was trucked to the CrossPoint Community Church in Gadsden, Alabama, where it remains. After several unsuccessful campaigns for Governor of Alabama, Moore ran for his former post as Chief Justice in 2012, and won back his old job.
The Chief Justice is also known for harshly anti-gay judicial rulings, including a 2002 decision where he wrote that "disfavoring practicing homosexuals in custody matters promotes the general welfare of the people of our State in accordance with our law, which is the duty of its public servants." In 2015 he made headlines by instructing lower-court judges in Alabama to continue refusing to grant marriage licenses to same-sex applicants, disregarding a federal court order declaring the state's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional.
