Gender: Male Religion: Anglican/Episcopalian Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Politician Party Affiliation: Republican Nationality: United States Executive summary: Congressman, Tennessee 4th Physician, elected to US Congress in 2010, succeeding Lincoln Davis and representing middle and eastern Tennessee. Conservative Republican, anti-abortion, anti gay rights, pro-gun rights. Key campaign statements called for repeal of the 2010 health care reform, elimination of wasteful government spending, ending corporate bailouts, and instituting term limits for Congress. Resigned from the American Medical Association in protest over the AMA's endorsement of 2010 health care reform. Surname is pronounced day-jar-lay.
Although his public stance is adamantly anti-abortion rights, DesJarlais testified during his 2001 divorce that his wife had two abortions during their marriage, and that he had concurred in both decisions. The divorce came after the revelation of a tape-recorded conversation DesJarlais had with his mistress in 2000, in which he urged the woman to obtain an abortion: "You told me you'd have an abortion, and now we're getting too far along without one. If we need to go to Atlanta, or whatever, to get this solved and get it over with so we can get on with our lives, then let's do it." Another juicy detail revealed by the recording is the fact that the mistress was one of his medical patients.
Still serving in Congress, DesJarlais remains a reliable vote against access to abortion for women he has not impregnated. Father: Joe (barber) Mother: Sylvia (nurse) Wife: Susan (div. 2001) Wife: Amy Son: Tyler Son: Ryan Daughter: Maggie
