As a young man he worked alongside his brother Bindo on the assembly line at the Italian automaker Isotta Fraschini. When business slowed at Fraschini the two brothers went into business for themselves, first making spark plugs and gradually adding other auto parts. By the early 1920s two more Maserati boys, Ettore and Ernesto, had joined the business, and in 1925 the company began designing a high-performance race car for Diatto, another Italian car company. When Diatto withdrew from auto racing in 1926, the Maserati Brothers business was reorganized as Officine Alfieri Maserati S.p.A, and they began building race cars under their own nameplate. Within a few years Maserati vehicles were regularly winning European races. Alfieri Maserati, the acknowledged leader of the company and the siblings, was seriously injured in a racing wreck in 1927, but eventually returned to the company and resumed his design work. In 1932 he underwent surgery to repair some of the lingering damages from the wreck, and died on the operating table.
After his death, the surviving Maserati brothers continued designing and building vehicles by hand, completing only nine more vehicles before selling the company four years later. The brothers then worked in design and racing under Maserati's new ownership until 1947, when they left the firm to establish Officina Specializzata Costruzione Automobili (OSCA), a new automaking company which they managed together until 1967. In addition to the four brothers who worked at Maserati, the eldest of the Maserati brothers, Carlo, drove race cars for Fiat and Bianchi but was killed in a wreck in 1911, several years before the family business was founded. A sixth Maserati brother, artist Mario Maserati, designed the company's logo. Maserati is now a subsidiary of Fiat.
